Mgmt: Ten Years in Full Form
There were those who thought (and still think) that it comes from the typical grouping (in this case, a duet) one hit wonder and after his great success with the song “Kids”, in 2007, would have disappeared from the map.
Nothing more wrong. Apart from that I prefer “Time to Pretend” “Kids”, the project of american (Brooklyn, New York) Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden has not stopped recording since their debut album Oracular Spectacular (Columbia, 2008). Well, MGMT returns with its musical proposal, based on the electro-pop eighties, with a certain dose of psychedelia and letters filled with black humour and intelligent bad milk. Little Dark Age (Columbia, 2018) is their fifth full-length, and despite its dreadful cover and one-piece vent opener is perhaps not entirely convincing (“She Works Out Too Much”), it becomes a butterfly full of colors that comes out of its chrysalis to spread his wings with a dozen of songs varied, and in truth excellent (although “Me and Michael” remember a both to the Pet Shop Boys and, ” d’oh!”, to Moenia).
We are faced with an album produced by Patrick Wimberly (of the also duo Chairlift), which means a sound, neat and clean, but don’t fall into the pasteurization business. To MGMT has never been interested to be a part of the maistream of the music and are there to check their other albums, much more experimental (Congratulations, 2010; LateNightTales, 2011; MGMT, 2015).
Little Dark Age takes us by the hand to lead us along a pleasant journey through different soundscapes, with tracks as good as “When You Die”, “TSLAMP”, “James”, “One Thing Left to Try”, “When You’re Small’, “ ” Hand It Over”, the instrumental “Days That Got Away” and the eponymous “Little Dark Age”, released as first single.
A disc highly recommended and full of reasons to enjoy, especially if you listen at full volume.
